The Trinity United Church of Christ is the church of choice for the man who might be our next president. Given that he and his wife have attended this church for more than twenty years it might be valuable to know what they church stands for.
From its web site, “We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian… Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain “true to our native land,” the mother continent, the cradle of civilization.”
One video goes as far as to claim that the church is a “radically welcoming church.” Given some of his public comments I think Reverend Dr. Wright was unaware of this claim. Here’s a commercial that the church created. Apparently it was banned.
In 1982 Trinity adopted The Black Value System. If you are a liberal that blames anyone but yourself for your problems you will love this document. If you are a minority that blames “whitey” for your problems you will love this document. If you are like most Americans and think that you have every opportunity to succeed in our great country if you make good decisions and learn from your bad decisions — you might not like what you read. Let’s take a closer look:
Commitment to the Black Family
“The Black family circle must generate strength, stability, and love despite the uncertainty
of externals, because these characteristics are required if the developing person is to
withstand warping by our racist competitive society.”
Yep. Our society is still very racist. In my humble opinion racism is supported and perpetuated by minorities looking for excuses and shortcuts. Group-think can be powerful, especially when it involves race. Minorities have every chance to succeed, and often have greater opportunity to enter schools or gain employment than European Americans. Affirmative action, quotas, etc. The concept of merit is dying a horrific death.
Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
“…Real education” fosters understanding of ourselves as well as every aspect of our environment. Also it develops within us the ability to fashion concepts and tools for better utilization of our resources, and more effective solutions to our problems. Since the majority of Blacks have been denied such learning, Black Education must include elements that provide high school graduates with marketable skills, a trade or qualifications for apprenticeships, or proper preparation for college.”
The majority of Blacks have been denied such learning? Being ‘denied’ learning is the same as not being allowed to learn. America provides school to every child in the country for free! (actually, it’s paid for by property taxes, but you get my point.) All you have to do is show up! Choosing to skip school, join a gang, do drugs or screw a ho’ isn’t the same as being denied an education. It’s an excuse to blame someone else for your own stupidity or ignorance. I grew up in a world where actions have consequences, didn’t you?
Disavowal of the Pursuit of “Middleclassness”
“Classic methodology on control of captives teaches that captors must keep the captive ignorant educationally, but trained sufficiently well to serve the system.”
What kind of crap is this? Is the implication that “White America” (Reverand White’s term, not mine) is the captor and Blacks are ignorant captives? One paragraph states that the captors “[places] them in concentration camps, and/or structuring an economic environment that induces captive youth to fill the jails and prisons. Maybe I missed this at the last Cracker Club meeting but I don’t remember the lesson on how to induce Blacks to commit robberies, rapes, murders, car jackings and drug crimes. After all, these innocent children are not capable of thinking of these things on their own. It’s the fault of the White Man. Blacks are just poor victims of the powerful and rich Caucasian population.
Give me a friggin’ break.
So what’s my point? Barack and Michelle Obama have attended the church that supports and lives by the principles listed above. How can they not be influenced by the separatist rants of a blatant racist like Reverend Dr. White? Show me the sermons or teachins of the Mormon Church that spew hatred and say “God Damn America” instead of “God Bless America.” Show me the Catholic Church that refers to our great country as the “US KKK of A.” I don’t believe that Barack is a racist, but I do suspect that Michelle Obama is a touch more racially militant. Her “proud of my country” comment was not a slip, it was a sign of her true feelings. Do you want her whispering in the President’s ear at night? Do you want a junior senator with a far left liberal voting record and no actual leadership experience running the country? I certainly don’t.
Obama can try to distance himself from Wright’s verbal diarrhea, but his actions (or inactions) speak volumes. As long as he remains a member of Trinity he endorses the views of the establishment and its leaders.
…d-i-v-i-d-i-n-g.
Obama’s relationship with his church is relevant. Just like it was for Mitt Romney. The press jumped on Romney like tots in a Hoppy House. Where’s their vim and vigor now? Hopefully the highly combustible nature of ‘Reverend’ Wright’s comments will finally draw some well deserved attention to his church.
The decision of which church to attend is a serious one for religious people. Faith presents a problem for supporters of Wright and his comments; many liberals are irreligious. Therefore they know not of what they defend. Many of them don’t realize what goes into choosing a church for your family.
As children we go to the church that our parents dragged us to. As adults, free from the rules and bonds of the pre-college years we have the opportunity to explore and experiment. To me, a church is a place to worship, a place to become part of a community, a place to be with people that share many of the same values that I live by. The Obamas have been members of Trinity United Church of Christ for more than 20 years. They have listened to Wright’s comments for two decades. If they disagree with his preachings they would not have stayed as members. They would not have been married by him. They would not have had him baptize their children.
They chose to remain members of the church.
Given the hateful, divisive nature of Wright’s comments I question Obama’s judgment. I question his intelligence. I question his deepest feelings on America. Here are the values espoused by this church. This list was obtained from the church’s official web site several months ago. It has since been removed and replaced with these Talking Points about The Black Value System:
- Commitment to God
- Commitment to the Black Community
- Commitment to the Black Family
- Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
- Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence
- Adherence to the Black Work Ethic
- Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect
- Disavowal of the Pursuit of “Middleclassness”
- Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the Black Community
- Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions
- Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System
- Personal commitment to embracement of the Black Value System.
When you dig deeper into the Black Value System you find nuggets like this:
Commitment to the Black Family
“The Black family circle must generate strength, stability, and love despite the uncertainty
of externals, because these characteristics are required if the developing person is to
withstand warping by our racist competitive society. ” (source: page 1)
Try replacing the word Black with White and then post this at your church web site. How soon do you think Jesse Jackson would be in town calling you a racist?
America is a country where we can speak and pray as we like, perhaps Michelle could be proud about that? However, freedom doesn’t mean that just anyone can be our president. Barack Obama is a long-term member of a radical and divisive church and it can be argued that his judgment is not sufficient to lead our country.
